LAS VEGAS (AP) -- The 65-year-old mother of an unarmed Gulf War veteran fatally shot in his car during a December police standoff is suing Las Vegas police for tens of millions of dollars in damages.
Celestine Gibson alleges excessive force and multiple constitutional rights violations against the police department, the officer who shot Stanley Gibson, and two supervisors responsible for what the lawsuit calls a "shocking excessive plan" to reach Gibson.
Las Vegas police declined immediate comment. The lawsuit was filed Monday in U.S. District Court in Las Vegas.
The 43-year-old Gibson suffered post-traumatic anxiety and cancer that he blamed on his military service.
Police stopped him driving slowly through an unfamiliar apartment complex with his emergency flashers activated like he was lost.
