Seattle, WA ( - A Seattle Mariners official said Friday that first baseman Jesus Montero and a team scout exercised "bad judgment at nearly every stage" during a confrontation at a minor-league game.

General manager Jack Zduriencik said Montero has been called up from a rehab assignment with the Everett AquaSox but will not play for the Mariners again this season.

National crosschecker Butch Baccala has been sent home until further notice.

Montero and Baccala were involved in an altercation during a Class-A game on Thursday night in Boise, Idaho.

According to accounts, Montero was angry after Baccala sent him an ice cream sandwich in the dugout. Montero took a bat into the stands and threw the ice cream sandwich at the scout.

Zduriencik said the team was still investigating the incident but "it is clear that both Jesus Montero and Butch Baccala engaged in behavior that is far below what we expect from members of our organization, including bad judgment at nearly every stage of this incident.

"I want to apologize on behalf of the Mariners franchise to the Boise Hawks and their fans," Zduriencik said. "We recognize that fans, including children, were impacted by this incident, and the language that was used. We recognize the severity of this incident, and want to assure the Hawks and their fans that it will be dealt with appropriately."

Once a red-hot prospect, Montero appeared in just six games for the Mariners this season after showing up for spring training overweight. He was called up briefly in June and then again for one game last month and was rehabbing a strained oblique with Everett when the altercation occurred.

The Mariners signed Montero to a one-year contract in February.
