LAS VEGAS (AP) — NV Energy says scammers are calling customers to say power will be cut if the person doesn't pay up.

The utility company says they've heard reports of scammers identifying themselves as NV Energy employees, then threatening to cut electricity if the customer doesn't send a cash transfer or credit card payment immediately.

NV Energy says employees never call customers to seek payments. The utility says residents who may have their power disconnected are notified by mail 10 days and then 48 hours before the lights go out.

The company says NV Energy employees and contractors out on the field wear identification badges and are not authorized to receive payments.
