LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Authorities say a 6-year-old girl is dead after her grandfather accidentally ran over and dragged her as she tried to get into his moving vehicle in southwest Las Vegas.
According to the police report, the 2006 Dodge Magnum was stationary, parked on the south side of Torino Avenue when the girl approached the vehicle and attempted to get inside.
Metro police say the girl was standing just behind the man's Dodge Magnum on Tuesday when Michael Gant, 52, who is the girl's grandfather, started driving away on Torino Avenue west of Riley Street.
They say the girl grabbed onto the vehicle and tried to get into it, but Gant didn't notice. The child was dragged about 40 feet when the driver realized a collision occurred and he stopped the vehicle.
The girl, Censere Mosly-Wedemyer, was taken to the University Medical Center, where she was later pronounced dead.
Police are calling the death an accident. They say it's the 35th traffic-related death this year in Las Vegas police jurisdiction.
