NORTH LAS VEGAS -- North Las Vegas Detectives arrested Carmen Gustin of North Las Vegas on charges stemming from a shooting that occurred in her home on Aug. 9 that left her 10-year-old sun in critical condition with an allegedly self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head

Gustin, 38, was booked into the Clark County Detention Center on charges of child abuse with substantial bodily harm, two counts of child neglect, and one count of destroying evidence.

Her bond was set at $160,000. She is scheduled to appear in Justice Court at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The boy remains in the hospital, but his current condition is unknown.

Authorities say the boy appears to have found a handgun in the house and shot himself Aug. 9 while he was home alone with a 3-year-old brother.

Police say the 10-year-old has difficulty speaking but gestured in a Wednesday police interview from his Las Vegas hospital bed that he was responsible for the gunshot.

Charging documents accuse 38-year-old Gustin of initially telling police her son's head injury came from a fall. They say she also took the gun her son had used and hid it in a dresser drawer.

Dispatch received information about 4:20 p.m. Aug. 9 from medical personnel that they responded to a home in the 3500 block of Creosote Way, near Gowan Road and Allen Lane, regarding an injury to a child.

When they arrived, they found a 10-year-old boy with a serious head injury, possibly a gunshot wound. The boy was transported to UMC Trauma in critical condition.

The preliminary investigation revealed that the boy was home alone with his 3-year-old brother. The boys located a handgun, and evidence suggests the 10-year old boy shot himself. Their mother came home, found her son injured and called 9-1-1.

Gustin was booked into the City of Las Vegas Detention Center on unrelated misdemeanor warrants but was not been charged in connection with this shooting at that time.

Child Protective Services took custody of the 3-year-old boy and a older teenage brother who was not home at the time the shooting occurred.
