LAS VEGAS (KSNV & MyNews3) -- There are 6,000 sex offenders in the Las Vegas valley. While some have served their time, the Division of Parole and Probation still keeps tabs on more than 900.
They do that with just 18 officers. With a growing offender population and no budget increase in the last few years, can they really stop these predators from committing another offense, especially when these men and women are often clever, sophisticated and manipulative and effective at avoiding detection? It's tonight's special report.
News 3's Elizabeth Donatelli spent time at the parole and probation office and shows us what she found out.
For starters, it is impossible to keep tabs on all of them every minute of the day and certainly if they want to re-offend it is possible. Having said this, the folks at parole and probation have a 90 percent success rate of those they monitor not re-offending.
The division of parole and probation keeps tabs on more than nearly 1,000 of the 6,000 sex offenders in southern Nevada.
