LAS VEGAS -- A 50-year-old unidentified man has become the 91st traffic fatality handled by the Metro police department this year.
The vehicle-pedestrian accident happened at 8:40 Saturday night at Las Vegas Boulevard and Mesquite Street when the man attempted to cross the boulevard from west to east outside of a crosswalk about four feet from Mesquite Street. The site is immediately south of I-515 and the boulevard in central Las Vegas.
The man was struck by a 1998 Dodge Durango driven by Ernest Pope, 72, of Las Vegas. Metro's report of the accident said that as the Dodge began entering the left turn lane, the pedestrian stepped off the median into the same lane and was struck by the vehicle.
The pedestrian was transported to UMC Trauma and was pronounced dead.
The Clark County coroner's office will announce the name of the pedestrian as well as the cause of death after identification and notification has been made.
The collision is under investigation by LVMPD's accident investigations section.
