Pedestrian was not using crosswalk in fatal crash, police say

LAS VEGAS (Las Vegas Sun) -- A pedestrian who was hit by a vehicle and killed Wednesday around 6:13 p.m. in the western Las Vegas Valley was not using a crosswalk, Metro Police said.

Metro Police Lt. Barb Schmidt said the 60-year-old man was walking outside a designated crosswalk near Charleston Boulevard and Durango Drive when a Ford Explorer crashed into him. The Explorer’s driver was not at fault, Schmidt said.

According to the police report, the 1999 Ford Explorer driven by 56-year-old George Noyes of Las Vegas, was traveling west on Charleston Boulevard, in the right travel lane, east of Durango Drive.

The pedestrian was crossing Charleston Boulevard from south to north and was not in a crosswalk. The pedestrian entered the right westbound travel lane and was struck by the front of the 1999 Ford Explorer.

The pedestrian was transported to University Medical Centera Trauma where he was pronounced dead. The driver of the 1999 Ford Explorer remained at the scene.

This is the 83rd traffic related fatality in the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Departments jurisdiction for the year 2013.

The collision remains under investigation by the LVMPD Accident Investigation Section.

The intersection was closed while police investigated the incident.
