LAS VEGAS (KSNV & MyNews3) -- Over-breeding of pit bulls leads to overpopulation of the animial ans is leading to thousands of dogs being put down.

This week News 3’s I-Team is investigating a pet crisis in our valley.

Pit bulls are hard to get adopted, hard to keep in HOA’s, hard to insure but now they are being rescued by a local organization who puts them to work serving people who need help.

The Animal Foundation and Janet Edberg with Smarty Paws have connected one family with Max, a pit bull, who was placed in training to become a service dog.

There are some difficult realities. Pit bulls are overbred in our valley. People are not getting the message to spay or neuter their pits and every day the Animal Foundation gets 110 new dogs

Some of those, many of which are pit bulls, end up euthanized. There are those who say pit bulls are dangerous—one father tweeted News 3 saying he lost a son to a pit bull attack.

Smarty Paws is one program trying to save pit bulls by placinng them in a program to be trained as a service dog.
