LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3.com) — Political supporters of cattle battle rancher Cliven Bundy, including Nevada Sen. Dean Heller, who has characterized Bundy as “a patriot,” and Assemblywoman Michele Fiore, R-Las Vegas, have issued statements today critical of the Bunkerville man who has been in the national spotlight for his battle with the Bureau of Land Management.

Bundy is quoted in the New York Times as providing his perceptions of life for African-Americans since the Civil Rights movements of the 1960s.

“They abort their young children; they put their young men in jail because they never learned how to pick cotton,” Bundy said, “and I’ve often wondered, are they better off as slaves, picking cotton and having a family life and doing things, or are they better off under government subsidy? They didn’t get no more freedom. They got less freedom.”

Bundy, who has battled the BLM for two decades over grazing rights and fees on federally owned land about 80 miles northeast of Las Vegas, delivered his comments during a Saturday news conference on his ranch that was attended by a reporter and videographer from The New York Times.

A Heller spokesman said his boss completely disagrees with Bundy.

Fiore issued a statement that reads: “I strongly disagree with Cliven Bundy’s comments about slavery. Mr. Bundy has said things I don’t agree with; however, we cannot let this divert our attention from the true issue of the atrocities BLM committed by harming our public land and the animals living on it.

"I am committed to opposing BLM’s actions in this roundup and in roundups across the country. If they cannot be responsible and respectful, then they should be barred from any further interactions with the animals and public land."

Rep. Steven Horsford, D-Nevada, issued a statement that reads: “Cliven Bundy's remarks are truly hateful. His despicable comments about 'the Negro' belong in the dust-bin of history. He is not a man who represents the American West's way of life or the dignity of our hard-working Nevada ranchers.”
