LAS VEGAS(KSNV/MyNews3.com) -- The details are being fine tuned to bring on the new Chief Health Officer for the Southern Nevada Health District.
"I have no feeling that this is less than stellar selection on our part," said Tim Jones, Chairman of the Chief Health Officer Succession Committee meeting which is putting all the finishing touches on bringing in Dr. Joseph Iser.
He's to become the Chief Health Officer of the Southern Nevada Health District. The former Washoe County CHO was on the phone during the meeting.
"I really appreciate the opportunity: first to have come down to interview and now to be in this position. I feel honored and appreciative, and I look forward to working with all of you on a longterm basis," Iser said on speaker phone.
The proposed contract for starters is for one year at $235,000 that can be renewed but with a cap on unpaid leave for the duration of his employment no matter how long he works.
One of the issues that came up during the selection process was a state law that required that applicants be licensed in the state of Nevada to practice medicine, making it difficult to do a national search.
But that changed in July, making it easier to find candidate but board member and Clark County Commissioner Mary Beth Scow says the process was already underway.
"There was some feeling that when we had the discussion we'd like to open it up again but some people were concerned that if we did that we would lose Dr. Iser's candidacy," Scow said.
So as the details are finalized committee members feel confident in Iser's future leadership.
"I believe he has a wealth of experience having worked in other communities as well as working in other, the CDC and the national/federal level. I believe he brings that experience when it is well needed here," Jones said.
He will have his challenges especially with finances.
"First of all the building, there are some big questions about now whether to build a new building or to purchase an existing building, or stay in the building on Valley View," Scow said.
Dr. Iser is expected to start at the end of the month.A special meeting is expected to be held next week in front of the Southern Nevada Health District Board of Health for final approval of Dr Iser's contract.
