LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3) -- Santa will be out and about this morning handing out special gifts to local drivers. But the gifts aren't merry and bright -- just expensive.
Police will be looking for jaywalkers and naughty drivers near Nellis and Bonanza as they host another crosswalk safety event. The event is similar to North Las Vegas police sending out a decoy a few weeks ago to cross the streets and catch drivers who don't bother to stop.
But this time, they're adding a little Christmas cheer to the mix -- the decoy will be a Santa and a giant Christmas tree!
The event is part of a valley-wide effort to promote pedestrian safety in light of the recent rash of pedestrian-involved crashes this year. Today, citations given out to motorists who fail to yield to a pedestrian carry a minimum $190 fine plus court costs and fees.
For pedestrians who are not follwing the rules, a ticket could buy four months of unlimited travel on the cat bus system.
A few things to remember: anywhere two streets intersect the pedestrian has the right of way -- there does not have to be a painted crosswalk. And for pedestrians, don't ever assume that because you have right of way, vehicles will stop for you.
