LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3) --Senate Majority Leader Mo Denis is pushing for Driver’s Privilege Card in Nevada for undocumented immigrants, when the legislature gets underway next week. He unveiled some details to dozens of people at a Latin Chamber of Commerce breakfast in Las Vegas.

He’s patterning the bill after a Driver Privilege Card already in existence in Utah.

“One thing we've seen in Utah is they actually get insurance at a higher rate in Utah. The folks that get the driver's privilege card actually get insurance at a higher rate than the regular population and people who say they won't get insurance but they do because they want to protect their property too,” Denis said.

The proposed legislation would grant permission for a person to drive a car, but it would not serve as an official form of identification that you would need to board a plane. Holders would have to also have taken the same test as a holder of a regular driver’s license. That means written and driving.

Denis believes that would mean safer drivers resulting in safer roads. Lynnette Sawyer of the Hispanic Museum of Nevada says that ought to be a relief to people.

“I think you have people that may have an accident, people who are victims of this of accidents who will have a better opportunity to be covered because if someone hits you who does not have a license or is not insured, then you have to carry the brunt of the insurance,” Sawyer said.

Denis says he has tried this measure twice before but it never made it out of the legislature, however this time could be different as Nevada’s GOP is realizing it needs to win over Hispanic votes in order to win elections.
A few states have similar laws in effect including most recently Illinois.

Yeah I had one run into me on I95. I got his driver license info that he pulled out of his wallet. The insurance company never could find him. It took 6 weeks to get the claim to go thru. Deport all of them, thier already breaking the law and all these politicians are breaking the law giving them a ride for votes. If people would vote the politicians out that pander for votes, starting with harry ried it would be a better country!!!!!!!!!!

I have no qualms about an undocumented or illegal getting a driver's license, just as long as DMV verifies their identity and that the undocumented or illegal takes the written test and driving test, this just might make our roads safer.

NO, NO and MORE NO! Why should we keep rewarding criminals for their criminal behavior? Until you are a citizen (legally) of the US, you get NO rights, including the right to drive on our streets! NO NO NO!

Let me guess, MO is a Liberal Democrat? More BS, They have done this in numerous states with the same pitch. Check out the Other states DL's, They are no different then anyone else's. Just more rewards for those who break our laws freely! I am so sick of this crap, I can throw up!

A Plain red background and the rights secured with a $100,000 surety bond for when they kill someone in a traffic accident then run back to Mexico. I lucked out, but I had a drunk Mexican....not an American citizen, a Mexican national...total out my car. Metro investigated and cited him for suspended DL (prior DUI) and following too closely (yeah, he tail ended me while I was stopped at a light). He never appeared in court, no insurance (big surprise) and disappeared back across the border. Sorry, I have no sympathy for putting any more of them on the street without some guarantee of pay off of obligations. And insurance just wont cut it.
