LAS VEGAS — The Animal Foundation, Nevada’s largest open admission animal shelter and pet adoption agency, is encouraging area seniors to take advantage of their Seniors 4 Seniors Adoption Discount Program.

The program offers seniors (ages 60+) $50 discounts on adoption fees for dogs 3 years and older and cats older than 1.

The shelter receives more than 40,000 lost, unwanted and abandoned pets every year. While young cats and dogs find homes quickly and easily, older pets are frequently passed over.

“Puppies and kittens have their appeal,” says Diana Lammerts, assistant director of operations for The Animal Foundation. “They’re small. They’re cute. Many people are interested in raising a pet, but doing so takes time, patience and countless resources. The younger pets aren’t always the best choice for everyone. The pets that are a little older can make great companions for seniors.”

Adult animals are often calmer and gentler than their younger counterparts, which can be a better match for less active adults. Additionally, seniors often spend more time at home, which can be ideal for older pets that don’t need as much exercise.

“Not only are we trying to find more pets homes through this program, we’re trying to improve the lives of seniors in our community,” Lammerts adds. “We know that these pets can be wonderful companions for our seniors.”

Companion animals help improve the mental and physical health of owners of any age, and the benefits of pet ownership to elderly persons can be life changing and lifesaving. Owning a pet lowers blood pressure and stress levels, and seniors with pets have fewer cases of depression, become more active and have an increased sense of security. The companionship of cats and dogs can provide friendship for lonely individuals and create opportunities for others, which an older person may miss if family is far away.

The Seniors 4 Seniors program is sponsored in part by The Pets for the Elderly Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit that helps pay the fees to participating animal shelters throughout the United States for senior citizens (age 60 and over) who adopt a companion dog or cat. The Pets for the Elderly Foundation has been partnering with The Animal Foundation since 2005. In 2013, 383 pets were adopted to senior residents through the program.
