LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3) -- Fifth-graders at Wasden Elementary returned to school Monday without a classmate.

During the winter break, 10-year-old Jade Morris was killed. Police say the suspect was a woman she knew well, her father's ex-fiance'.

The Clark County School District had several counselors on campus, having students talk about what they're feeling and giving them ideas on how to feel better.

Across from the school is this makeshift memorial for Jade. It's become the first stop before and after school for Kayla Evans, Jade’s best friend.

“I was hoping that she would still be alive and that she would come back like not hurt or anything, so I could tell her that she's the best friend I ever had,” Kayla said.

Counselors were at school to deal with emotions Jade's slaying evoked.

The School District says extra counselors will remain on campus as long as they are needed.
