LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3.com) — Work began this morning to install approximately 1 mile of new storm drain under Fort Apache Road between Elkhorn Road and CC-215.

Work hours during Phase 1 will be from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The first portion of the work will be the section along the CC-215, as the contractor has 90 days to finish the portion up to Echelon Point. After that, one side of Fort Apache will be closed a block at a time, diverting all vehicle traffic to the other side with one lane open in each direction of travel.

The project will consist of constructing 12-foot-by-6-foot reinforced-concrete box under Fort Apache Road, with associated reinforced-concrete pipe, junction structures, inlet structures, manholes and associated facilities, and connecting two major lateral storm drains to the main system at Deer Springs Way and Echelon Point Drive. The work is expected to take 12 months.

Motorists should expect delays. Once lane restrictions begin, it is suggested that drivers use Durango Drive or Hualapai Way as alternate routes for north-south travel, and Farm Road or CC-215 for east-west travel.

Once the work on Fort Apache is complete, work on storm drain installation on Elkhorn Road from Fort Apache to Grand Canyon Drive will begin. Clark County also will be starting a project soon to construct a bridge over the CC-215 at Fort Apache and the missing section of Fort Apache from CC-215 to Echelon Point Drive.

The estimated cost of design and construction of the entire project is $12 million, with funding provided by the Clark County Regional Flood Control District and the Regional Transportation Commission.
