LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3) -- On Monday, summer vacation comes to an end for more than 300,000 students here in Clark County.

But while families prepare to send kids back to school, air conditioning technicians for the district want to make sure campus is comfortable on Monday.

There were a number of air conditioning meltdowns during this past school year, and in some cases parents had to come early and pick up their kids because the classrooms were just too hot.

Las Vegas’ climate is tough on A/. units. Techs go call to call during the school year, trying to keep on top of repairs. At Walker Elementary in Henderson, techs checked the blades on a 10-year-old chiller system. The routine maintenance was begging done in preparation for the start of school.

Interim Maintenance Director Jimmy Brimmer admits units at some schools are not running at 100 percent right now, but he's confident kids will be comfortable on Monday.

"We do have some that may be working at 60 or 70 percent," Brimmer said. "But we're working with those issues right now. We're on top of them. We know who they are, where they are.”

Brimmer said that on Saturday, his staff will start up the A/C to cool the schools down and ensure a safe transition when school starts on Monday.

Brimmer's staff is on-call constantly to take care of repairs at all 357 schools as well as over 100 administrative buildings.

The district had hoped to replace a number of aging A/C units with a property tax increase on last November's ballot, but the measure, Question 2, was voted down.
