LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3) -- The Galleria Library inside the Galleria shopping mall in Henderson will shut its doors Wednesday. This is the first of two libraries to close following the election earlier this month in which voters decided no to higher property taxes to help sustain the financially strained library system.

The day before the Galleria library closes, library employee Nicole Thomas helps pack up books off the shelves. She says there is a strong sense of sadness in the air, especially from the customers that have been trickling in all day long, asking about the library workers who will lose their jobs.

“It's hard, because I’ve been working here for so long and a lot of my coworkers we're actually close friends and it's just really sadness. That’s about the only way I can describe this. It’s just sad,” Thomas said.

Library customer Robert Oelke understands the reality, but the fallout is difficult to face.

“I am very much for public libraries and it's going to be sad because there may be some people who just don't come here, don't bring their children to get children's books, which is so important for the development of young children right now,” Oelke said.

The books will be either stored or distributed to other Henderson branches.

Meanwhile the Malcolm Library also prepares for its closing on the 30th, next Friday. It will be used for storage. Both the Galleria and Malcolm libraries have loyal patrons.

“Both have walking communities around them. They’re nestled into neighborhoods, especially Malcolm. You have three schools nearby and they all come through here during the course of the day. The neighbors around us come in. That's going to stop,” said Henderson Libraries Executive Director Tom Fay.

There are four other Henderson libraries to offer services to people.

The space at the Galleria where the library will close will be used by a non-profit organization to wrap gifts during the holiday season.
