LAS VEGAS -- Las Vegas firefighters responded to a fast moving fire that spread to two homes near Jones Boulevard and Alta Drive Tuesday afternoon.

One elderly lady suffered minor smoke inhalation. The American Red Cross is assisting four adults and two children who are displaced.

Fire dispatchers received several calls at 3:03 p.m. that a house at 5612 Alta Dr. was on fire.

When firefighters arrived on scene, heavy flames were shooting up from the rear of the one story wood frame house. Flames were so intense that they were starting the house next door at 5616 Alta Dr. on fire also.

Several fire units arrived on scene was able to stop the fire from doing additional damage on the neighboring home and then began attacking the main fire. Firefighters had the fire under control in 15 minutes.

The fire did heavy damage to the outside rear portion of the house at 5612 Alta.

Fire investigators determined the fire started on the patio at the rear of the house. It then burned into the attic of the house spreading across the attic.

The interior of the home had smoke damage and the kitchen area was gutted. Damage was estimated at $100,000.

The house next door had damage on the outside of the home and a small amount around a window on the inside. Damage to the home was estimated at $25,000.

Fire investigators could not determine the exact cause of the fire because of the intense destruction from the heat. They determined it started outside on the patio, it appears to be accidental in nature.

A teen and small child was home when the fire started. They were not aware of the fire until neighbors banged on their front door and yelled for them to get out their house was on fire.

The two escaped without injury. The woman next door, who was in a wheelchair, also escaped, but inhaled some smoke in the process.

She was treated by paramedics on scene and released.

A total of four adults and two children live in the two homes. The American Red Cross is assisting both households.
