LAS VEGAS -- The man and woman accused of setting fire to a local pet store with 27 puppies inside appeared in court Friday morning to challenge the charges against them.
At the pretrial hearing, Gloria Lee and Kirk Bills said they were illegally detained.
Bills' attorney said there was not enough evidence to identify his client in a video of the shop being torched.
He also said the indictment did not prove Bills conspired with Lee.
Both attorneys tried to negotiate the 27 counts of animal cruelty down to a single charge.
Ultimately, the judge found circumstantial evidence did support the charges against Bills. The conspiracy between the two and the 27 counts will remain at this point in the case.
Another pre-trial hearing is set for September 3. Their trial is set for October 6.
