LAS VEGAS (KSNV & MyNews3) -- There was emotion today as higher education Regents took up the issue of tuition hikes.

Supporters say the extra money is needed to for the ever-increasing cost of education. It was a close vote but at the end, the Regents voted 7-6 to increase tuition by 17 percent.

Opponents complain the increase would make it too expensive.

“I think it’s unfortunate that people who don’t have money to begin with are expected to invest more money in order to gain money,” said UNLV student Walter Kwong.

The Board said it cost money to run colleges and financial investments have to be made. Those who were opposed say no pressure needs to be placed on the legislature.

“I think financially it’s very upsetting in that a lot of the regents may not appreciate or understand because they are not in our position, so it’s upsetting that they can’t sympathize with us," said UNLV Student Body vice president Kanani Espinoza.

The sharpest opposition came from the students. Some say they will have to drop out and others say they have stretched themselves thin and are working while carrying full-time loads.

The tuition hike will take effect in the fall of 2015 going up 4.25 percent for the each of the next three years.
