LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3) -- The family of machete attack victim Maria Gomez, 53, confirmed to Safe Faith United that she lost her battle with cancer today.

The family of the victim is accepting finacial donations to cover funeral expenses. Anyone wishing to make a donation can do so through a Wells Fargo Bank, account No. 319-206-1962.

No funeral arrangements have been announced.

Gomez was the victim of a brutal attack on March 21. North Las Vegas Police responded to a call of a stabbing in progress at the Green Valley Grocery, 530 E. Craig Road.

With guns drawn officers approached a small, green four-door car. On the ground next to it, they saw a Hispanic man and woman beside one another covered in blood, according to the police report.

Amando Vergara-Martinez was bleeding from a cut on his neck and was next to a woman later identified as Gomez, according to the report.

Gomez was getting out of her car when she says her then-boyfriend started hitting her with something and quickly passed out.

She woke up about a week later in the hospital; her hands had been reattached after being hacked off. Her hair was shaved so doctors could stitch up the wounds to her head.

Police arrived while the attack was still going on. They arrested Vergara-Martinez and charged him with attempted murder.

Vergara-Martinez is being held in the Clark County Detention Center on $250,000 bail. His trial is set for Oct. 22.
