Madison, WI (SportsNetwork.com) - Wisconsin junior quarterback Joel Stave will be sidelined indefinitely due to an injured right shoulder.

The announcement from head coach Gary Andersen leaves Tanner McEvoy as the unquestioned starter for the 18th-ranked Badgers, who host Western Illinois on Saturday.

"Joel has been dealing with some issues with his throwing shoulder for the last couple of weeks and we have come to a decision, after talking with Joel, that the best thing for him right now is to shut it down and give him some rest," Andersen said. "It was a tough decision because Joel is a great competitor and has a tremendous desire to help this team. We will continue to monitor his progress but we're not putting a timetable on his return at this time."

Stave started all 13 games for the Badgers in 2013 and threw for school- sophomore record 2,494 yards. He also had 22 touchdown passes, second-most in Wisconsin history, and also established a school record with 336 pass attempts and became just third QB in school history to complete 200 passes in a season (208).

McEvoy completed 8-of-24 passes for 50 yards and also ran for 40 yards in Wisconsin's 28-24 season-opening loss to LSU. McEvoy transferred before last season from Arizona Western College, where he threw for 1,943 yards and 25 touchdowns in his lone season at the school. Last year with the Badgers, he struggled at QB and was moved to safety.

Andersen also announced freshman tight end T.J. Watt will miss time due to a right knee injury, which required surgery during training camp. Andersen is hopeful Watt will return to "the practice field at some point during the conference season."
