CARSON CITY (KSNV MyNews3.com) — Coins minted in Carson City during Nevada’s early years are treasures to historians and very valuable to collectors.

Rusty Goe of Southgate Coins has made a life of piecing together coin collections, especially ones that originate from Carson City's mint during the peak of the silver boom.
In Part 2: Lawmakers in Washington are working to curb counterfeits. And there is one trick coin dealers use to tell the real coins from the fakes. Friday on News 3 Live at 5

Silver from the famous Comstock Lode, minted by the Carson City Mint, bears a “CC” mark.

“The coins are a part of our history,” Goe said. “Carson City Mint is a monument of success in Nevada’s history.”

But history is not honored by criminals and counterfeiters, who are now perfecting the art of replicating the “CC” coins. This counterfeiting threatens to irreparably harm not only the coin industry, but also the legacy of Nevada’s mint.

“Anybody can go on line right now and they can Google ‘fake Chinese Carson City coins,' ” Goe said.

Nevada historians place the blame on Jing Hua Shea for flooding the U.S. market with fake Carson City coins.

“They actually produce dyes; hundreds and thousands of these,” Goe said, adding that Shea “doesn’t feel he’s doing anything wrong. He’ll sell you a whole set for $169.”

A $169 set  if it were real  would be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

EBay is full of ads for Carson City coins. Many, Goe says, are fakes from sellers based in China.
