LAS VEGAS — The Clark County district attorney’s office has determined that the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officers involved in the October 2012 death of Ronald Morrison acted reasonably and lawfully.

“Mr. Morrison was armed and dangerous. He shot a homeless man and then, when confronted by police officers, he pointed his weapon at them too,” District Attorney Steven Wolfson said in a news release. “Mr. Morrison was a threat to the officers and the citizens in the area.”

According to the review released today, Metro officers responded to a call that shots were fired at a shopping center at Desert Inn Road and Eastern Avenue on the afternoon of Oct. 29, 2012. When officers arrived they found a man bleeding from a gunshot wound to the hand.

They were given Morrison’s description and located him on the loading dock of one the retail stores. As officers approached Morrison, he stood up and started to walk toward them. Officers repeatedly told him to stop. Morrison did not comply with the commands, and instead pointed his gun at the officers. In response, the officers shot Morrison.

A Police Fatality Public Fact-Finding Review was conducted Aug. 14, and the report released today is meant to be considered in conjunction with that Review.

The determination that the officers acted lawfully in this situation is based upon the evidence available at this time. The case could be reexamined if new information comes to light.
