LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3.com) — A Good Samaritan who helped save the life of a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officer spoke exclusively to News 3 about the event.

Michael Elgas placed a choke hold on the subject who, a police report says, was attempting to get the gun of a pinned-down Metro officer.

Elgas says he “was very scared. I ain't going to lie to you I was very scared, but I just did what I had to do. It was the right thing to do.”

Curtis Traupman, 39, is facing charges of attempted murder, resisting public officer with use of a firearm, and battery on a protected person. He is scheduled to return to court Monday.

According to the arrest report, the officer was sent to Jack in the Box on Boulder Highway near Russell Road just before 6 a.m. March 21 on a report that a person was yelling at employees. The officer was informed that one of the employees wanted Traupman to leave the business. Traupman left the restaurant, and the officer followed.

The officer then told Traupman that he was not under arrest and could leave. Instead, according to the report, Traupman approached the officer in an aggressive manner. The officer decided to place Traupman in handcuffs.

They began to struggle, and the officer was knocked onto his back. Traupman, who is listed at 6-foot-4 and 240 pounds, got on top of the 5-7, 160-pound officer.

The report said that Traupman hit the officer in the face and head; he also tried to get to the officer’s gun. Elgas grabbed Traupman by his neck and helped prevent him from getting hold of the gun.
