LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3.com) – A person was killed this morning after being struck by an RTC bus on Las Vegas Boulevard North near Owens.
The accident occurred just before 11:30 a.m., according to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.
Witnesses say the victim was not in the crosswalk at the time of the crash.
According to passengers on the RTC bus, a middle-aged man stepped onto Las Vegas Boulevard as the bus was traveling northbound.
The man wasn't in a crosswalk according to witnesses who were in the area at the time of the crash. They say they felt the bus driver did all he could to avoid hitting the man.
“I felt the swerve. He was trying to dodge but he couldn't stop the big bus that quick,” said Katrina Rudy, one of dozens of passengers who were on an RTC bus when the driver tried to avoid hitting a middle-aged man.
Metro received the call just before 11:30 Friday morning.
Passengers say the man stepped onto Las Vegas Boulevard as the bus was traveling northbound. Witnesses tell News 3 he left his belongings on the sidewalk.
But it's unclear if the man was trying to get across the street or if he jumped in front of the bus.
“He just stepped off. The bus tried to swerve. Cracked the whole side,” Rudy said.
The cracks on the windshield were fairly high and there are dents on the front right corner of the bus.
When we got there, the bus driver was distraught and clinging to a fence as he cried on the phone.
“It happened so quick. You saw the glass shatter the guy was already on the floor,” Rudy said. “You can't stop the bus that quickly these people need to think before they jaywalk.”
