LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3.com) — Las Vegas Fire & Rescue Chief William McDonald says a tentative agreement has been reached between the department and American Medical Response over ambulance calls.

Five months ago, a policy change pitted the private ambulance company against the city. AMR's contract with Las Vegas is set to expire in December 2015.

In March, McDonald eliminated the dual-dispatch model, hoping to take on more patient transfers as a way to boost revenue for the city. AMR called it a public safety hazard.

"When we started this process we didn't know if it was going to be AMR or if it was going to be another provider because our intention was to go out to bid,” McDonald said. “Once we though defined the roles and responsibilities and what we were looking for in a provider, we shared that with AMR, and we just worked through it until we got an agreement."

McDonald says the tentative contract will move to the Sept. 3 City Council agenda for approval. He emphasizes this is a non-exclusive contract, and other private companies can still apply to partner with the city.
