LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3) – An 81-year-old man in a wheelchair was struck and killed Thursday by a Clark County School District bus just before noon on Maryland Parkway, just south of Reno Avenue.
According to a release from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, the bus westbound on Reno stopped for the stop sign at Maryland. The victim was riding a motorized wheelchair northbound on the west sidewalk of Maryland. The wheelchair entered the marked crosswalk, just south of Reno, and began crossing eastbound.
As the school bus turned southbound onto Maryland, it struck the wheelchair. The pedestrian was transported to Sunrise Hospital, Trauma Center, where he was pronounced dead by attending medical personnel.
The Clark County School District released at statement from interim Superintendent Pat Skorkowsky: "We are saddened by the news of this terrible tragedy. The Clark County School District extends our deepest sympathy to the victim and his family. Safety is always our top priority, and we will fully cooperate in the investigation of this matter."
This is the 36th traffic-related fatality in Metro’s jurisdiction in 2013.
This collision remains under investigation by the LVMPD Accident Investigations Section.
