LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3.com) – The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is asking for witnesses to step forward in the case involving the carjacking that led to the deaths of two men, one of whom was a California Highway Patrol officer.
Police say that just before 11 a.m. Sunday, James Montgomery stole a white Ford F-150 from the East Valet area of the Flamingo Hotel. Felix Cruz was in the bed of the truck loading luggage as the truck was driven away. Jesus Magdaleno, an off-duty CHP officer, and Cruz’s brother in-law, jumped into the back of the truck as Cruz was yelling for Magdaleno to help him.
Magdaleno yelled several times identifying himself as a police officer and to stop the vehicle. Several witnesses saw both men waving their arms and yelling for help.
According to police, Montgomery proceeded westbound on Flamingo Road, driving recklessly through numerous red lights, never stopping or slowing the vehicle enough for Cruz and Magdaleno to jump out of the truck bed. He collided with another vehicle at the intersection of Flamingo Road and Valley View Boulevard, ejecting both Cruz and Magdaleno, killing both men.
Metro Homicide detectives are asking for any additional witnesses, as well as any taxi cabs with video surveillance in the area during the time of the incident.
Anyone with any information is urged to contact the LVMPD Homicide Section at (702) 828-3521.
