LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3.com) – The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department has released the names of the officers involved in a shooting of a subject near the UNLV campus on Monday night.
Officer Todd R. Fasulo Jr., 27, has been employed with Metro since August 2008. Officer Ronald D. Thoma, 43, has been employed with the Metro since July 2000.
Both officers are assigned to the LVMPD Patrol Division, Southeast Area Command and have been placed on routine paid administrative leave pending the outcome of a review of this incident.
According to a Metro news release, officers responded to a two-story single family residence in the 3200 block of University Avenue to investigate reports of a potentially suicidal male.
Arriving officers met the individual’s roommate who reported the man, later identified as Jose Luis Aguilar, 39, was threatening suicide. When officers attempted to make voice contact with Aguilar through an open front door, they observed him descending the stairs with a shotgun pointed in their direction.
Officers immediately retreated to positions of cover outside of the residence as Aguilar continued to move in their direction, and ultimately exited into the front driveway area.
Officers were able to convince the suspect to put the weapon on the ground and then himself lay on the ground; however, as they moved forward to take him into custody, Aguilar abruptly stood up, picked up the weapon, and pointed it at approaching officers.
Two officers discharged their weapons, striking the suspect in the lower extremities and causing him to fall to the ground.
After a brief struggle Aguilar was taken into custody by officers, and transported by medical personnel to Sunrise Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
He was charged in absentia on two counts of assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer, and resisting a public officer with a firearm.
