LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3.com) — A woman who was stabbed and her husband shot and killed in the violent crime spree on Tuesday morning has a warning for everyone: Don't open the door to strangers.

Police say Cody Winters and his accomplice, Natasha Jackson, kidnapped and robbed a highway service worker, then terrorized a southeast Las Vegas neighborhood, killing Richard Ramos and wounding his wife, Julie.

After killing Ramos, police say Winters and Jackson tried to break in to several other homes and then parted ways. Winters was shot and killed by police after dragging out the second gunshot victim onto the porch. She remains in critical condition.

Julie Ramos warns others to be very careful. “We don’t know these people at all,” she said. “I don't know why he opened the door; that's not normal.”

Like many home invasion robberies, police say the suspects used deception to get inside.

Police say if someone unexpectedly knocks at your door, speak up to let them know you're home; ask questions; and do not feel pressured to open the door.

While criminals often look for crimes of opportunity, police say making sure you lock your doors and windows, and putting lights and alarm systems around your house make it harder for them to break in.
