LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3.com) -- Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened early Thursday morning near Charleston and Bruce.
The situation started about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday when a man reported his roommate had shot at him. Metro responded, but the suspect had left the scene.
Early today Metro received a call from the man who reported the shooting to say his roommate had returned to the residence.
Police say that when they tried to approach the suspect, he pulled out what appeared to be a gun. One officer fired and hit the suspect. The gun turned out to be a pellet gun.
One witness says there were more officers who fired, a claim that Metro disagrees with.
“There were more than 12 officers out here, but the one that fired, it was at least seven or eight,” said Deshario Bankston. “They surrounded him, and I heard one yell and one yell and then everybody started shooting, like pack, pack, pop, pop. and they stopped and then pop, pop, and then stopped again, so it was more than one officer out there that shot.”
According to a news release from Metro, the first officer located the suspect, later identified as Miguel Alejandro Martinez, 29, of Las Vegas, in an alley behind the residence.
When the officer attempted to contact Martinez, who uses the street name of “Psycho”, Martinez turned toward the officer as he pulled what was believed to be a semi-automatic handgun from his waistband.
The officer fired several rounds from his handgun, striking and disabling Martinez who was transported to the UMC Trauma Center in critical condition. The officer was uninjured during the confrontation.
The preliminary investigation into this incident revealed the weapon Martinez pointed at the officer was a replica of a Colt .45 caliber semi-automatic compact handgun which fires pellets instead of live rounds.
