LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3.com) — Drone testing has already started in North Dakota--so how long until they take off in Nevada?

The Governor's Office of Economic Development says there were a few drone test flights on April 15. The flights took place in a special use area that did not require FAA approval.

That approval has already been given to North Dakota, and News 3 has learned that Nevada is close to receiving its own FAA approval.

Dr Woosoon Yim, who is in charge of the drone minor program at UNLV, says the university, the Desert Research Institute, and the state are working together to make test flights happen sooner rather than later.

Local attorney Joe Brown, who has been working closely with the state to develop drone law, says a local drone company, Bowhead Systems and Technology Group, is meeting with the Federal Aviation Administration in Washington on Thursday.

Brown tells us they expect Nevada's approval to come very soon, but could not pinpoint an exact date.

A spokeswoman for the Office of Economic Development says the process continues to move forward and they expect to have the first official drone test flights starting in late May.
