NORTH LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3.com) – A 38-year-old man is dead after an overnight officer-involved shooting in North Las Vegas.

According to a news release from the North Las Vegas Police Department, a uniformed North Las Vegas police officer on patrol in the area of Tonopah Avenue and Woodard Street advised over the radio around 1:10 a.m. that he would be out for investigation with a man on foot near a home in the 800 block of East Tonopah Avenue.

Moments later, the officer advised dispatch he fired his weapon striking the man and requested medical.

The suspect was pronounced dead on scene by medical personnel.

A preliminary investigation indicates the officer stopped his marked patrol car along the sidewalk and attempted to approach the man on foot. The man was uncooperative and began to back away from the officer toward the backyard of the abandoned property.

The officer called for back-up and continued to walk towards the suspect. The situation continued to escalate, and the officer fired his duty weapon at the suspect, striking him multiple times.

The man was armed with a knife, which investigators recovered from the scene.

The Clark County coroner’s office will release the identity of the decedent after notification of next of kin.

The 31-year-old officer is a five-year veteran of the department and has been placed on paid administrative leave. The name of the officer involved will be released after 48-hours in accordance with Nevada law.
