LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3) — The latest proposed arena in the Las Vegas Valley cleared its first hurdle Wednesday, making the planned $1.4 billion facility immediately south of the SLS Hotel closer to reality.

The Clark County Commission unanimously approved a zone change that would allow the planned All Net Resort and Arena to be constructed on the north Strip location formerly occupied by Wet-N-Wild. A separate hearing will be scheduled to address traffic issues.

Led by former UNLV and NBA basketball player, Jackie Robinson, the planned arena would accommodate 22,000 fans. The project would include a retractable-roof arena, a boutique-style non-gaming resort, a movie theater and a shopping area on the 27-acre site.

Robinson, 59, took a personal approach before commissioners voted, speaking of an inspiring moment from his past that led him to dream up his arena idea.

“I ran into Sammy Davis Jr. in a restaurant,” Robinson said. “He looked at me and said I hope one day I can see an African American own a hotel … I had no idea I’d be standing in front of you today.”

Just $300 million of the $1.4 billion needed for the project has been raised so far from a team of investors that Robinson has yet to identify.

The All Net project is the latest planned arena in the valley joining the MGM-AEG arena near New York New York, UNLV Now and the Symphony Park Downtown Las Vegas arena ventures.

Confident his plan will pan out, Robinson has his eyes set on bringing an NBA team to Las Vegas once the arena is a reality.

Robinson was joined at the meeting by a group of friends and family that included former Runnin’ Rebel great Reggie Theus.
