LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3.com) -- Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval addressed the League of United Latin American Citizens this morning at Caesars Palace.

Sandoval touched on everything from his humble beginnings cleaning sheep pens to the important issues impacting the Hispanic community.

“Some 34 years ago my father belonged to LULAC.” Sandoval said. “He wanted something more for Hispanics and more opportunities for my brother, sister and me.”

Sandoval highlighted the work Nevada has done to help create more opportunities, in particular, for the next generation. He pointed to the history-making bill passed into law to help young students struggling to make the grade.

“For the first time in the history of Nevada, as part of my budget and working with the legislature, I dedicated a $50 million budget for ell students in Nevada,” Sandoval said.

There’s also the new law allowing undocumented immigrants to drive legally. It is legislation, Sandoval says, which aligns with the mission and goals of LULAC to better the lives of Hispanic people.

Sandoval says there’s much more left to be done in Nevada and the nation.

He acknowledged the differences that remain in moving comprehensive immigration reform legislation forward but says lawmakers have to find a way forward and arrive at something that works for both parties and, ultimately, the people who desire to make this country their legal and permanent home.

LULAC’s education arm hosted the breakfast. The conference concludes Saturday.
