LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3) -- The dedication of the new Senior Squares monument was celebrated this morning in front of the Las Vegas Academy, formerly Las Vegas High School.

According to the Las Vegas High School Alumni Association, Senior Squares became a tradition at Las Vegas High School in 1941 when a senior painted a large "41" on one of the cement squares in front of the main entrance to the school.

The principal at the time, Maude Frazier -- who also was the Las Vegas Union School District Superintendent from 1927 to 1946 -- decided to start a tradition for future senior classes, and a square was painted by every class until 1988.

They were maintained by the art classes over the years. However, the painted squares deteriorated and became unrecognizable.

In 2003 a group of LVHS alumni restored the squares on the cement. Because of extreme weather conditions in Las Vegas, they had to be restored a couple of times since then. A more permanent solution, not requiring maintenance, was sought.

A new upright monument, with the squares replicated on large ceramic tiles, has been constructed to replace the squares.
