LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3.com) -- Synthetic marijuana is a nationwide problem and the Drug Enforcement Administration is taking notice -- and Las Vegas is on its radar.

A national crackdown on synthetic marijuana has led to the capture of a suspected drug kingpin. Agents raided the home of John Gilbert Bowen, where prosecutors say he ran a business named "Heart of Asia."

Bowen is accused of distributing and supplying synthetic marijuana to hundreds of smoke shops across the country.

The illegal drug is blamed for hundreds of teens getting sick and rushing to hospital emergency rooms.

David Marlons, president of Solutions Recovery, says you never know what drug suppliers are putting in their shipments.

Bowen faces charges ranging from violating the controlled substances act to conspiracy to defraud the United States. DEA agents said Bowen is in federal custody in Las Vegas.

Las Vegas drug counselors say spice is a growing problem because anything could be laced in a distributor's shipment.
