LAS VEGAS — Chris Shaw has been named the head women’s soccer coach at UNLV, director of athletics Tina Kunzer-Murphy announced Wednesday.

Shaw comes to Las Vegas with a wealth of coaching experience, having spent the past 11 years as either head coach of a Division II program or assistant coach at the Division I level. Most recently, he served as the head women's soccer coach at Barton College in Wilson, N.C.

Taking over a Lady Bulldog program that had posted just 12 wins total in the four previous seasons combined, Shaw made an immediate impact by leading the 2013 squad to a 14-5-1 mark, the second-best record in school history. He guided the program to its first winning season and first Conference Carolinas Tournament appearance since 2008, and its first tournament win since 2005.

"Chris had everything we were looking for when we began this search for our new women's soccer coach, and we're excited that he will be joining us here at UNLV," said Kunzer-Murphy. "I know he is excited about the chance to take over our program and continue the winning tradition that has been established with our women's soccer program."

Shaw replaces Michael Coll, who resigned in March after two seasons to take the head coach position at UNC Greensboro.

"I am very excited to have the opportunity to lead the UNLV women’s soccer program," said Shaw. "The future looks very bright for this team with so many players returning and a talented incoming freshmen class."

UNLV finished 2013 with a 10-8-3 record while reaching the Mountain West tournament for the fourth straight year. The Rebels will return seven starters from last year’s squad.
