Editors Note: The text below is the original story that aired on News 3 in July of 1984. Footnotes have been added to update the information.

These classrooms are empty now. But more than reading, writing and arithmetic will be taught here. This is the new Meadows School. (1) A non-denominational private school for kindergarten through sixth grade. The children enrolled here will follow an advanced college preparatory program which includes foreign languages, beginning with Spanish in kindergarten, adding French in a couple of years and rounding it out with Latin in the 4th, 5th and 6th grade. (2)

"A group of parents (3) wanted a college prep school," Dr. Leore Cobbley (4) told News 3. "And I think that alternative education is a good thing so that they have choices."

This water fountain isn't working right now. (5) As you can see, the Meadows School is still in the building stage.  But the opening school bell is set to ring on September 4th.

The school will operate entirely on donations from parents and the enrollment fees collected for each child. The fee schedule goes like this: Children in grades one through three pay $3,000 per year. Those in four, five and six pay $3,500 a year.  Full day kindergartners pay $2,500, while half-day kindergartners pay $1,600. (6) Students also have to go through private testing to qualify for the school.

The maximum number of students enrolled will be 160 ... 20 students per class. (7) One class will be taught in each grade. Except for kindergarten, which will have two sessions...one full day and one half day.  There will be eight full-time teachers, and several part-time specialists. (8)

A playground will be in this area. But there are no plans to add a cafeteria. (9) At least in the first year, the students will have to brown bag it.

"It builds my enthusiasm just to talk to the parents and the children," says Dr. Cobbley. "And you know, as long as education is well planned and well organized, children are anxious to learn."

School organizers plan to add another grade each year, until the Meadows goes through 12th grade. (10)

  1. This story was shot at the original temporary location on Meadows Lane. Four years later it was moved to the current location in Summerlin.

  2. In addition to those, the Meadows School is now part of the Global Online Academy consortium of schools where students can explore other languages.

  3. The leader of the movement to establish the Meadows School was Carolyn Goodman, who had school age children at the time.  Today Goodman is Mayor of Las Vegas.

  4. Dr. Leore Cobbley was Goodman's handpicked choice to be the school's first Headmistress. She passed away in 1997.

  5. The reporter for this story is Marla Martin, who was at Channel 3 for a couple of years in the early 1980s. Today she is a spokesperson for the real estate industry in Florida.

  6. Prices have gone up over time, of course. Here is the current tuition schedule:
    Beginning School: $9,590
    Lower School: $17,030
    Middle School: $19,000
    Upper School: $22,450

  7. Classroom size still maxes out at 20, but total school enrollment today is 881.

  8. This year three are 84 full-time instructors and one part-time.

  9. A 3,000-square-foot dining facility was added last year, designed to resemble a college dining common.

  10. By 1990, the Meadows had a complete teaching facility for grades K-12.
