HENDERSON -- A 23-year-old woman was shot and killed Tuesday by a 22-year-old Henderson man who claimed he was playing around with a handgun and did not think it was loaded when he pulled the trigger.

Colin M. Lowrey was booked into the Henderson Detention Center on an open murder charge. He was held without bail Tuesday.

The Clark County District Attorney’s Office will determine the exact nature of the charge the suspect may face when booked on an open murder count – first-degree murder, second-degree murder, voluntary manslaughter or involuntary manslaughter.

Lowrey called 9-1-1 around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday saying a handgun accidently went off and a woman was shot in the head inside the house in the 700 block of Taliput Palm Place, near Gibson and Sunset roads.

The woman was taken to Sunrise Hospital’s Trauma Unit for treatment where she died from her wounds.

Lowrey and the woman were in the house that he shared with three other roommates. At some point he was playing with a semiautomatic handgun. He put it near her head and pulled the trigger. He said he didn’t think it was loaded. The gun involved in the incident was registered to Lowrey.

Detectives arrested Lowrey as the investigation indicated his actions directly led to the woman’s death.

The name of the woman will be released by the Clark County Coroner’s Office once she has been positively identified and her family has been notified. The woman’s death is the seventh murder in Henderson this year.
