LAS VEGAS -- Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department SWAT team was named the overall champion of the annual competition hosted by the Santa Clara California Sheriff’s Office held this past weekend.
Operators from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department competed against 30 agencies to determine who is the “Best of the West.”
The two-day competition required the SWAT teams to negotiate seven different courses. The courses tested physical fitness, tactics, and proficiency with weapons and teamwork.
The LVMPD trip to Santa Clara was funded by private donations and at the officer’s own expense. Officers also trained and competed on their own time.
LVMPD SWAT is staffed with two full-time tactical teams not including medical, psychological, and support staff. SWAT responds to approximately 60 hostage and barricade events annually. The operators serve more than 400 search warrants each year.
Other duties include dignitary protection, and hosting/instructing the renowned annual Intermediate SWAT School that welcomes students from around the world.
