Two suspects are in jail after police put an end to a crime spree late Wednesday that started as robberies at gas station convenience stores for small amounts of cash and cigarettes, but quickly escalated into robbing the same local casino three times.
Kevin M. Gamboa, 21, of Henderson was apprehended late Wednesday in a home off of Boulder Highway. He was booked into the Henderson Detention Center on seven counts of robbery with a deadly weapon and conspiracy to commit robbery. He was apprehended by the Criminal Apprehension Team, a taskforce comprised of Henderson Police detectives, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police detectives and FBI agents.
Max M. Paez III, 30, of Henderson also was charged with various counts of robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery. He has been in the Henderson Detention Center since late June on other charges.
A third suspect is being sought but is not currently in custody. Detectives will seek an arrest warrant for that suspect, but it is the policy of the Henderson Police Department to not release suspects’ names unless they have been arrested or there is a warrant.
The robbery spree started in April with the hold-ups of gas station convenience stores. A lone suspect would enter the store wearing a bandana covering his face; then point a firearm at the clerk and demand money. At least six convenience stores were robbed in April, May and early June.
One store was robbed twice with the same clerk there during both robberies. The clerk said the robbers were wearing almost the identical clothing, but he thought it was two different suspects.
Then on May 30, a suspect wearing the same bandana as in the previous convenience store robberies ran into Club Fortune Casino brandishing a handgun and demanded money from the cashier’s cage. The suspect made off with an undisclosed amount of cash.
The suspect in the May 30 robbery was wearing the exact same clothing as in a robbery at a convenience store about a week earlier.
The Club Fortune Casino was robbed two other times, June 6 and July 2, by suspects using the same method and wearing the same or similar clothing.
Through the investigation, Paez and Gamboa were identified as suspects. Search warrants were served at their homes and evidence collected.
