LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3) – A man convicted of stabbing a Las Vegas woman nearly to death has been found dead in his prison cell.
A prison spokesperson says Wade Ridley killed himself.
For his victim, this was a shocking ending to a long nightmare.
It was just February when Mary Kay Beckman came face to face with her attacker. Beckman gave a statement in court before Ridley was sentenced for up to 70 years in prison.
“I don't want to wish ill will but good riddance,” Beckman said in reaction to reaction to hearing for the first time what was behind Ridley's death.
Before being interviewed with News 3, Beckman received a letter from the Department of Corrections.
“I had to read it three times. ‘Offender passed away,’ and my instant thought was, ‘Why? How? What happened?’ “
Ridley was segregated from the other prisoners because of a disciplinary violation. Details of that violation are part of the investigation, but a prison spokesperson could tell us that isolation occurs when an inmate is considered a threat to others in the prison or to himself.
Ridley was placed in segregation April 24: five days later, he was found dead.
In an earlier interview, Beckman showed us the stab wounds from the January 2011 attack.
Ridley, who she met on a dating website, broke into her home and attacked her. Today, the scars remain but she is moving on, calling this the final chapter:
“Yes, I'm going to have bad days. I'm going to cry for the most part,” she said. “I'm still seeing a counselor, but I'm moving forward.”
Officials in Phoenix are also trying to find out more about Ridley's apparent suicide. Ridley was set to go to trial in Phoenix for allegedly killing an ex girlfriend.
