LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3.com) -- This Rip-Off Alert features a warning about a scam that's robbing tens of thousands of people nationwide. This one can easily be spotted and avoided.

When money orders – sometimes for hundreds of dollars -- arrive in the mail, some victims think it is their lucky day.

But it wasn’t. The money orders are part of what’s called the “mystery shopper” scam.

The scam works like this: Con artists send the money orders or checks to victims they lure in online.

The victims deposit the money order, do some shopping as instructed, complete a survey – and then send back a portion of the money deposited.

The problem is the money orders or checks are fraudulent, and victims are responsible for all of the money deposited.

Postal inspectors say there are ways to determine if a money order is a fake.

Postal inspectors say work-at-home schemes have become more prevalent but are rarely legitimate.
