LAS VEGAS (KSNV & MyNews3) -- You don't have to be a fan of boxing to know the the sport can bring big-time excitement to the Las Vegas Strip.

News 3's Tom Hawley spoke with the author of a new book on the history of boxing in Nevada. Author Richard Davies will discuss his book, The Main Event, as part of an Author’s Talk and Book Signing set for 1 p.m. Saturday, April 26 at the Mob Museum.

The Silver State has had many historic legal differences from the rest of the country - gambling, prostitution, and liberal divorce laws, for example. Prize fighting was prohibited nationwide until state legislature made the change for one specific fight in 1897.

UNR professor Richard Davies has the story in The Main Event and explains that when fights were finally legal in New York and elsewhere, organized crime moved in, law enforcement cracked down, and promoters looked for some where to start fresh.
