CORVALLIS, Ore. (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV baseball (35-24) jumped out to a 2-0 lead over UC Irvine (36-22), but the Anteaters used a five-run fifth inning en route to a 10-3 victory over the Rebels on Friday afternoon at Goss Stadium.
Senior Patrick Armstrong opened the scoring by driving the third pitch he saw over the left field wall in the second inning, giving UNLV a 2-0 lead over the ‘Eaters.
UC Irvine answered by taking advantage of some Rebel miscues and tied the game in the top of the third inning. The ‘Eaters then took a lead they wouldn’t relinquish by plating five runs in the fifth. UCI also plated a run in the sixth, eighth and nine innings.
The Rebels looked to cut the Anteater’s lead in the bottom of the sixth, but were only able to score on run, while leaving two stranded.
Joey Swanner, Morgan Stotts, Pat Armstrong and Edgar Montes each recorded a hit for UNLV.
John Richy (11-4) took the loss after allowing nine runs, eight of which were earned, on nine hits in 7.2 innings of work.
The Rebels will play the loser of top-seeded Oregon State and North Dakota State, which will be played at 8 p.m. PST, at 2 p.m. PST on Saturday.
