UConn students collect $60K on Huskies' NCAA title

Students from the University of Connecticut hold their winning tickets before cashing them in Saturday at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. Twelve students each made a $100 bet at 50-to-1 odds for UConn to win the men's basketball tournament in March. The win netted the group $60,000 and they planned to spend quite a bit of it in Las Vegas for the Memorial Day holiday, they said. (Chase Stevens, Erik Kubik Photography)

LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3.com) -- A 50-to-1 longshot bet on the NCAA men's basketball tournament has paid off for no less than a dozen University of Connecticut students.

Eleven of the 12 made the trip from New Haven, Conn., to Las Vegas this weekend -- each collecting $5,000 from the sports book at the Hard Rock Casino & Hotel.

The winners were: Tom Andreoli, Patrick Charmel, Paul Delvecchio, Chris Demattie, Marc Demattie, Dave Faenza, Ferid "Frank" Feratovic, Harrison Fuchs, John Mitkevicius, Michael Price, Dan Stewart and Andrew Zielinski.

Each won 5,000 (a total of $60,000). The students each placed another bet on their school to win the tournament next year, and dined at Pink Taco after placing the bets.

"We knew from two years ago when we weren’t allowed in the tournament, we really thought we were going to pull it through the next year so we had to put some kind of money down on it," UConn senior David Faenza told News 3. "And since we were all graduating we wanted to be able to make one big trip with each other and it worked out perfectly."

They planned to have a good celebration this weekend.

"We’re spending all of it right here at the Hard Rock, every single cent. It’s going right back," Faenza said.

Except for one more wager.

"We’ve got to put the bet back in at the Hard Rock again and then we’ll win it again next year."
