Just west of downtown, a new street system is underconstruction for the "Symphony Park" area.
Yesterday, the city cleared the way for a new green space right in the middle.
Let's call it the "park within the park". The name Symphony Park is applied to the sixty one acres bounded by the railroad tracks, Bonneville, Grand Central Parkway Ogden.
The centerpiece is the Smith Center for the Performing Arts, which will be home to the Las Vegas Philharmonic.
The exterior looks largely complete, though there is still a lot of work left inside before the scheduled mid-March opening.
Eventually, the smith center will be surrounded by the Charlie Palmer Hotel, the Cleveland Clinic, Newland residential, and more.
There've been plans all along for a central green space. The city council made it official today, transferring the one point seven acres to the Smith Center.
Details of the appearance are coming out, too. With a large green lawn for traditional park activities and an elevated stage on one end...so it can handle concerts, festivals and community events.
The layout includes commissioned art pieces throughout the park.
Development of the new green space, artwork included...costs about$10 million. It's set to open the same time as the Smith Center. March 10 of next year.
